Windows is running slow

1. Check if there are is enough free hard disk space. Free hard disk space allows the computer enough room for the swap file to increase in size as well as room for temporary files.

2. Run Scandisk, to check the physical status of the hard disk.

3. Run Disk Defragmenter. This is to arrange data in the best possible order.

4. Remove or disable Startup programs, specifically those that are not really important.

5. If the OS is Win 95 & Win 98, go to MSDOS window
a. Type cd\ to go to C:\> prompt.
b. Type ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch.
c. Type ren config.sys config ch.
* These commands will rename autoexec.bat and config.sys. It will make sure that the memory is being optimized through Windows.

6. If the OS is Win XP, delete all files in the prefetch directory (C:\Windows\Prefetch). Prefecth permits Windows to load portions of commonly run programs when the computer first loads. This will enable frequently run programs to load faster.

7. Check the CPU, if the processor is not overheating.

8. Reinstall Windows.
