Recovering Microsoft Office Outlook messages that have been removed by a hard delete

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options subkey.
  3. From the Edit menu, select New and click DWORD value.
  4. Enter the name DumpsterAlwaysOn and press Enter.
  5. Double-click the new value and set it to 1. Click OK.
  6. Close the registry editor.

Lotus Notes Error: You do not have mail file specified. Use File Mobile Edit Current Location.

Resolution: Check the mail filename and mail file folder in location.
  • Click your current location (at your lower right corner).
  • Select Edit current.
  • Click the mail tab.
  • Check the filename. It should be the user’s mail database filename.

Lotus Notes Problem: Can’t forward mails.

Slow Lotus Notes performance

Below might help improve notes performance.
  • Delete the cache.dsk.
  • Unmark subscriptions during startup.
  • Check the Lotus Notes Client version.
  • Compact the database.

Lotus Notes Error: Invalid disk structure

Resolution: Reinstall the database icon.
  1. Go to the Workspace where the database icon is located.
  2. Take note of the database’s Server, path location, file name and database name.
  3. Delete the database icon.
  4. Click File – Database – Open. (Shortcut: Ctrl + o).
  5. Select the Server of the database.
  6. Go to the folder where the folder is located.
  7. Double click the Database name. Database icon will be displayed again on the Workspace.


Lotus Notes Replication

  1. Launch the Lotus Notes application. Log in your password.
  2. Ensure that the current location is Office.
  3. Right click the database you want to replicate (e.g. mail database). Select Replication New Replica.
  4. Configure the settings (Input Database, Server and File Path). Click the More Settings button.
  5. The Replication Settings will be displayed. Click the Basics option found on the left side of the window. If you want to set scheduled replication click the Change Schedule button. Follow the settings shown below. Click OK.
  6. The Replication Workspace will be displayed. Once the replication is done you may close the window.
  7. A new database icon will be displayed on the Workspace.

How to create a location in Lotus Notes

  1. Click FileMobileLocations.
  2. Click the arrow down of New button and select Location.
  3. On the Basic tab, type your preferred location name on the Location name field. It can be your name. The Location type field should have Local Area Network value.
  4. Click the Servers tab. Type the Notes server of your Mail database. Leave the other fields blank.
  5. Click the Mail tab. Type your Mail filename, including the complete path. Type the Mail domain. Other configurations should have same value as shown on the picture below.
  6. Click the Save & Close button. Click the X button of your Local Address book.

Setting up Power on Password.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Press F10, once the F10 Set-up message appears in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. On Setup Utility window, select Security – Power On Password. You will be prompted to enter new power on password. Re-enter the new password.
  4. Press F10 to update the changes.
  5. Go to File – Save Changes and Exit
  6. Confirm the changes made by clicking yes.


Windows is running slow

1. Check if there are is enough free hard disk space. Free hard disk space allows the computer enough room for the swap file to increase in size as well as room for temporary files.

2. Run Scandisk, to check the physical status of the hard disk.

3. Run Disk Defragmenter. This is to arrange data in the best possible order.

4. Remove or disable Startup programs, specifically those that are not really important.

5. If the OS is Win 95 & Win 98, go to MSDOS window
a. Type cd\ to go to C:\> prompt.
b. Type ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch.
c. Type ren config.sys config ch.
* These commands will rename autoexec.bat and config.sys. It will make sure that the memory is being optimized through Windows.

6. If the OS is Win XP, delete all files in the prefetch directory (C:\Windows\Prefetch). Prefecth permits Windows to load portions of commonly run programs when the computer first loads. This will enable frequently run programs to load faster.

7. Check the CPU, if the processor is not overheating.

8. Reinstall Windows.


Returning to the Last Known Good Configuration

  1. If the user encountered a problem after installing new software, or patches, or updates or driver, you can use the Last Known Good Configuration tool to resolve the problem. This will return the last state of the computer before any changes were done.

Procedures on how to use the Last Known Good Configuration tool:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the results of the POST appear on the user’s screen, press F8 until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
  3. Select the Last Known Good Configuration option and then press Enter. Windows will restart with the old configuration settings
  4. If the restart is unsuccessful, the startup menu option will be displayed again on your screen. Select the Last Known Good Configuration again.
  5. If it still doesn’t work, try booting up in a Safe Mode.
  6. Use Recovery Console or reinstall Windows if the computer still won’t boot up.


Non-System Disk Error

1. Check if there is a diskette or CD in the startup drive. Remove it if there is any.
2. If the problem still exists, check the hard disk cable.
3. If the hard disk cable connection is ok and the problem still exists, there might be already s problem with the startup files.


How to get the computer name


  1. On your Desktop, right click the My Computer icon.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the System Properties, click the Computer Name tab. Click the OK button.

















How to add the workstation to the domain

  1. After the installation of Windows, the Getting Started with Windows 2000 screen will appear. Uncheck the checkbox of Show this screen at startup. Click Exit.
  2. Click Start – Control Panel. Double click the System icon.
  3. Click the Network Identification tab. Click the Properties button.
  4. Enter the Computer name with the following format -
  5. Tick the radio button before Domain. Type the Domain on the Domain box. Click OK
  6. The Domain Username and Password dialog box will appear. Enter an account that has a privilege to join the domain. On the Name box, type connect for the \connect password. Click OK.
  7. When the message “Welcome to the domain”, the pc is successfully connected to the domain.

  9. Click the Yes button to restart the computer.


Procedure on how to install Windows 2000 & Windows XP

  1. Make sure that your computer is set to boot up from CD-ROM drive. You can configure it in Startup Options by pressing F1 or F10 or F8.
  2. Load the Windows 2000 installer CD. Reboot the machine to detect the CD. The Windows setup will start with the checking of machine configurations and loading of files.
  3. Press Enter when the Welcome Setup screen appears.
  4. Review the Licensing Agreement and then press F8.
  5. On Partition step, select the option to delete the existing partition. Wait until the disk space is labeled as Unpartitioned Space. Then press C to create a new partition.
  6. Press Enter after the New (Unformatted partition is created.
  7. Select the Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press Enter. Formatting of hard disk will take time depending on its size and computer’s speed.
  8. You may set the parameters for Language, Advanced, and Accessibility options to default otherwise change them to user’s preferred value. Click Next.
  9. 9. Type Amkor and Amkor Philippines on the Name and Organization boxes respectively. Click Next.
  10. Type the Product Key. You can find it at the back of the Windows 2000 CD case.
  11. Type the computer name with the following format -OS
  12. Leave the Administrator password field blank. Click Next.
  13. Configure the time and date settings. Click Next.
  14. 14. Install networking components.
  15. 15. Click Next to accept the Typical settings. Click Next.
  16. 16. Select “No, this computer is not on a Network” and click OK. (Configuration of the pc’s connection to the Domain will be discussed on the next procedure.)

  18. Click Finish when the Setup is complete.

  21. Select the default user logged on (Administrator). Click Next and then Finish.


Turning off Windows Firewall

  1. Click on Start > Run
  2. Type in firewall.cpl
  3. On the General tab, click on Turn-off (not recommended).
  4. Retry accessing the site.

How to change (Lotus) Sametime Password

  1. Launch Lotus Notes
  2. Open ATP Address book (server copy)
  3. Open the person document or profile of the user affected.
  4. Click the Basic tab and click "Edit Person" button.
  5. Erase the password set in Internet Password field including the parenthesis.
  6. Enter a new password.The new password should be your Lotus Notes Password.
  7. Save and close. The password should be encrypted.
  8. Open the file of the user affected again to double check that the password entered is no longer readable.
  9. Save and close again.
  10. The changes will take effect after 4-24 hours.

Adding Database on Lotus Notes Workspace

  1. On your workspace, right-click it and click Open Database.
  2. A window will appear. On Server field, type and press Enter.

How to fix a corrupted Lotus Archive (Local)

A. Close the Notes Client.
B. Locate the archive file; take note of the filename and folder location.

For example: e:\archive\my_archive.nsf

  1. Go to the command prompt. To go the command prompt, go to Start –
  2. Run, then type cmd and then Enter.
  3. On the command-line, type cd\
  4. Go to the archive location, for the given example type cd e:\archive
  5. Type c:\progra~1\lotus\notes\nupdall –R e:\archive\my_archive.nsf, then press enter
  6. The system will prompt for a password, the password is for the current or last Notes ID entered. Press Enter after typing the password.
  7. When the nupdall task is finish, on the command-line, type c:\progra~1\lotus\notes\nfixup e:\archive\my_archive.nsf
  8. Type the password of the current or last notes ID login when needed.
  9. When the nfixup task is finish, on the command-line, type c:\progra~1\lotus\notes\ncompact –B e:\archive\my_archive.nsf
  10. If the Notes password is required, just type the password and then press enter.
  11. After the ncompact is finish, the repair is complete; you can now open the archive on the Notes Client.

Note: The duration of every task run on the above steps will vary from the size of the archive, if the archive is approximately 6 GB, it will take about 30 – 45 minutes depending on the speed on the computer.

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files

Synchronising your mail automatically (Outlook)

  1. Click Tools | Send/Receive | Send/Receive Settings | Define Send/Receive Groups.
  2. Tick Perform an automatic Send/Receive when exiting or choose to schedule every few minutes if you have a high speed connection.
  3. Click Close.

Excel 2007: "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

If you have ever tried to open an excel document and received the error that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program", you can fix it by doing the following:

  1. Open Excel 2007
  2. Open the Menu in the top left
  3. Click the "Excel Options" button
  4. Click the advanced tab on the left of the options screen
  5. Under the general options uncheck the box "Ignore other application that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)"

You receive a "Compile error in hidden module" error message when you start Word or Excel

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The Microsoft Office Startup folder or the Microsoft Excel Startup folder contains either or both of the following Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker add-in template files:
    Pdfmaker.dot
    Pdfmaker.xla
  • Norton AntiVirus software is installed.
To remove these files yourself this, follow these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Search for file or folders named box, type pdfmaker.dot pdfmaker.xla.
  3. In the Look In box, click the disk drive where Windows is installed, such as C:, and then click Search Now.

    The Pdfmaker.dot file is located in one of the following folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup (Word 2000)
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup (Word 2002)
    • C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
    The Pdfmaker.xla file in located in one of the following folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart (Excel 2000)
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Xlstart (Excel 2002)
    • C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\Xlstart
  4. In the Search Results window, right-click the file for each file that is found, and then click Cut.
  5. On your desktop, right-click the My Documents folder, and then click Paste.

Download Headers Outlook downloads the headers only. The full item, including attachments, is available on demand when you preview or open the item. Use this setting when you want the amount of data that is transferred to be as small as possible.

2. If you would like Outlook to download both headers and full items even when a slow connection is detected, untick On Slow Connections Download Only Headers.

Error opening attachment in Outlook "Can't create file:"

"Can't create file: . Right click the folder you want to create the file in and then click properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder."

SYMPTOMS:
When trying to open the message_zdm.html attachment from within Outlook, the following error is displayed:

"Can't create file: . Right click the folder you want to create the file in and then click properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder."

CAUSE:
This error is caused by the fact that the hidden folder that Outlook uses to store temporary files is full.

RESOLUTION:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. The folder location is stored in the registry in the following key:

Outlook 2000 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security

Outlook 2002/XP HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security

Outlook 2003 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

Outlook 2007 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security

3. Open the OutlookSecureTempFolder registry key from the location found in Step 2.
4. Copy the full path to the hidden folder.
5. Click Start, click Run, paste in the path from Step 4 and then click OK.
6. When the folder appears, you will want to delete all the files from this folder. DO NOT delete the folder itself, but only the files within it.
7. Once files have been deleted, re-open Outlook.
